Both tattoos and cats are super great, but together, they sure are a force to be reckoned with! Kazuaki Horitomo, a California-based Japanese artist and tattooist has somehow managed to capture the two elements, combining these two passions in a most amusing, surreal way.
Monmon Cats, his surreal collection of illustrations display painted felines wearing elaborate body art, often covering the cat’s backs and torsos, leaving their faces free on the great ink pieces – similar to a traditional tattoo known as a bodysuit.
20 years later, Horitomo is a well-versed practitioner of Japanese ‘tebori’ – the technique of applying body art by hand and you can surely see this in his artwork, where one cat is often tattooing another.
Additionally, the artwork is very ink washed – an ancient Japanese painting style, making these portraits look like they come from a date far before today’s.
